Villach

The second-largest city in Carinthia and an important traffic junction for southern Austria and the whole Alpe-Adria region, standing on the Drau near its confluence with the Gail at the western rim of the Klagenfurt basin. The municipal area runs from the slopes of the Gailtal Alps down to Lake Ossiach in the northeast. Villach takes part with other Alpine towns in implementing the Alpine Convention, and in 1997 it was the first place to be named Alpine Town of the Year.
