Vršič Pass

The highest pass in Slovenia at 1,611 metres, and the highest in the Eastern Julian Alps, connecting Upper Carniola with the Trenta Valley in the Littoral and serving as a starting point for the peaks around it. The Slovene vršič means little peak, a diminutive of vrh, and originally referred to Mount Vršič about 200 metres east; the name was not applied to the pass itself until 1911. Locally it is known as Na močilu. The upper section is mostly Anisian dolomite over grey limestones, sandstones and sandy marls.
