Triglav National Park

Slovenia’s only national park, established in its modern form in 1981 in the southeastern corner of the Alpine massif, with Mount Triglav almost at its centre and the valleys spreading radially from it, feeding the Soča towards the Adriatic and the Sava towards the Black Sea. Protection was first proposed by the seismologist Albin Belar around 1906 and refused, because there was no legal basis and the law of the day forbade any restriction on pasture. A twenty-year lease on the Triglav Lakes Valley finally implemented the idea in 1924.
