Viking Ship Museum

Around 1070 five Viking ships were deliberately sunk at Skuldelev in the Roskilde Fjord, to block the main fairway and shut the sea approach to the city. They were excavated in 1962 and turned out to be five different types, from cargo vessels to warships; the museum was built over the inlet in 1969 to hold them. Later digging for the shipyard extension found nine more medieval hulls, the largest such discovery in Northern Europe, among them Roskilde 6, from 1025, at about thirty-seven metres the longest Viking ship ever found.
