Roskilde Cathedral

The burial church of the Danish monarchs since the fifteenth century, and one of the earliest Gothic cathedrals in Scandinavia to be built in brick, which is why it matters beyond Denmark, since it helped spread Brick Gothic across Northern Europe. Built through the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, it carries both Gothic and Romanesque features, and the burial chapels added over the centuries each brought the style of their own moment, so the fabric reads as eight hundred years of European architecture in one building. UNESCO listed it in 1995. It is still a working church.
