Frederiksborg Castle

Christian IV built the largest Renaissance residence in Scandinavia across three islets in the castle lake at Hillerød, with a formal Baroque garden laid out beside it. A serious fire in 1859 took much of the interior, and it was rebuilt from old plans and paintings, funded in good part by the brewer J. C. Jacobsen, reopening in 1882 as the Danish Museum of National History. It holds the largest collection of portrait paintings in Denmark. The Chapel and the Audience Chamber were largely spared by the fire and keep their original decoration.
