Soča Valley

An Alpine river 138 kilometres long, ninety-six of them in Slovenia, rising in the Trenta Valley at 876 metres and running past Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Kanal, Nova Gorica and Gorizia before reaching the Adriatic near Monfalcone. Before the First World War it ran along the border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and during the war it was the scene of bitter fighting that culminated in the Battle of Caporetto in October and November 1917. It was recorded in antiquity as Aesontius, Sontius and Isontius.
