Trieste

Trieste is a city and seaport in north-east Italy, capital and largest city of the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, with 198,668 people as of 2025, the seventeenth largest in the country. It stands at the head of the Gulf of Trieste on a narrow strip of Italian territory, with Slovenia immediately behind it. Habsburg rather than Italian in its architecture and its coffee houses, it reads as a Central European city that happens to be on the Adriatic, which is exactly what it was.
