Lipica

Charles II, Archduke of Inner Austria, wanted a new stud farm in the sixteenth century, and the Spanish horse was then considered the ideal breed; because the soil and climate of the Karst resemble Spain’s, this village was chosen. The farm was founded in 1580, and twenty-four broodmares and six stallions arrived from Spain in 1581, the origin of the Lipizzan. The farmers already living here were evicted and resettled at Laže. The name comes from lipa, the linden, a Slovenian national symbol; the staff plant a new one for every foal born.
