Kobarid

Known everywhere by its Italian name, Caporetto, for the battle of 1917 in which the Italian army broke and retreated, a retreat Ernest Hemingway documented in A Farewell to Arms. The museum in the centre of town covers it thoroughly and won a Council of Europe award in 1993. The place sits in the Upper Soča Valley at the confluence with the Nadiža, the westernmost municipality in Slovenia. The name descends from a Romance form, probably from the Latin caper, goat, a place where there are goats.
