Goriška Brda

A hilly microregion of about 120 square kilometres on the right bank of the Soča, north of Gorizia, split between Slovenia and Italy, roughly 60 per cent of the territory and 80 per cent of the 7,000 inhabitants lie on the Slovene side. It is predominantly white wine country, with Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Chardonnay, Pinot bianco, Pinot grigio and Sauvignon blanc the leading varietals; the reds come under the Collio Rosso designation, usually blends of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
