About Verla

A wood-processing mill village of the late nineteenth century, kept whole: the owner’s wooden house and its park on the western bank with the factory buildings, the workers’ houses laid out in a regular pattern on the eastern side. The mill buildings are red brick, Neo-Gothic in appearance but technically advanced for their day. The first groundwood mill was founded in 1872 and burned in 1876; its larger successor of 1882 ran until 18 July 1964, when the last of the old workers retired. UNESCO listed the village in 1996. Rock art some 6,000 years old survives across the river.
