Tongeren

Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium and the only Roman administrative capital within the country’s borders. It was Atuatuca Tungrorum, the centre of the Civitas Tungrorum and home to the Tungri, and the Roman street grid still underlies the modern one. It lies in the south-eastern corner of Limburg, and since January 2025 has formed part of the merged municipality of Tongeren-Borgloon. The Gallo-Roman museum is the reason most people come, and the weekly antiques market is the reason many come back. The centre is small and easily covered on foot.
