High Fens

The High Fens (Hautes Fagnes, Hohes Venn) were declared a nature reserve in 1957 and are the largest in Belgium at just over 45 square kilometres, on an upland plateau in Liège Province between the Ardennes and the Eifel, running across into Germany. The reserve sits inside the wider Hohes Venn–Eifel natural park. Its highest point is the Signal de Botrange at 694 metres. This is raised bog, and it is genuinely exposed: boardwalks carry the marked routes across ground that will not take a boot, and the weather turns faster here than anywhere else in the country.
