St. Wolfgang

A market town on the northern shore of the Wolfgangsee at the foot of the Schafberg, named after Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg. Its draws are the Schafbergbahn, a rack railway that climbs the mountain behind; the Hotel Weißes Rössl, the setting of the play The White Horse Inn and the 1930 operetta made from it; and a pilgrimage church holding a late Gothic altarpiece by Michael Pacher. The town also stood in for a good deal of the 1987 American-Austrian television film Christmas with Flicka.
