Werfen

A market town in the Salzach valley south of the Lueg Pass, held between the Berchtesgaden Alps to the west and the Tennen Mountains to the east, known for Hohenwerfen Castle and for the Eisriesenwelt ice cave. Trade routes have run through this valley since the area was part of Roman Noricum. The settlement is first mentioned around 1140 and grew up south of the castle, which was begun in 1075. The region is the type locality of the Werfen Formation, a Triassic layer of the Limestone Alps.
