Sion

One of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe: the alluvial fan of the Sionne, the rocky slopes above it and the hills of Valère and Tourbillon have been settled almost continuously since antiquity. The oldest trace of human occupation dates from 6200 BC in the late Mesolithic, and early Neolithic farmers arrived from the Mediterranean around 5800 BC. The town is the capital of Valais, in the Rhône valley, with the Basilique de Valère and the Château de Tourbillon on the two hills above it.
