Nijmegen

Nijmegen stands on the Waal a few kilometres from the German border, and is the oldest city in the Netherlands, the first place here to be recognised as a city in Roman times, which it marked with a two-thousand-year anniversary in 2005. It was a free imperial city by 1230 and a Hanseatic town by 1402, and has been a university city since 1923. Every July it fills for the Vierdaagse, the International Four Days Marches, when tens of thousands of walkers converge on the town. The old centre, the quays and the parkland along the river are level and easy underfoot year round.
