Neusiedler See

The largest endorheic lake in central and western Europe, saline, shared between Austria and Hungary, 315 square kilometres in all, of which 240 lie on the Austrian side. It runs about thirty-six kilometres north to south and between six and twelve east to west, sits 115.45 metres above the Adriatic, and is nowhere more than 1.8 metres deep. Its drainage basin is roughly three times its own size. The surrounding country has been occupied since about 6000 BC, and the towns around the lake have been trading and meeting points for centuries.
