Belvedere

Two Baroque palaces, Upper and Lower, with an Orangery, the Palace Stables and a formal garden between them, built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy and designed principally by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, finished early in the eighteenth century after the prince’s military campaigns had made Vienna prosperous. It is now one of Austria’s major art museums: the permanent collection in the Upper Belvedere, special exhibitions in the Lower, and contemporary work at Belvedere 21. The ensemble forms part of the Historic Centre of Vienna World Heritage Site.
