Eisenstadt

The smallest state capital in Austria, at the foot of the Leitha Mountains about twelve kilometres from the Hungarian border. From 1648 until 1921 it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary within the Habsburg Empire and the seat of the Eszterházy family, and it was under their patronage that Joseph Haydn lived and worked here as a court musician. Burgenland was ceded to Austria in 1921 and Eisenstadt became its capital in 1925. Three institutes of higher education are based in the town.
