Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Twenty-one islands and a stretch of Lake Superior shoreline, 69,540 acres in all, of which 42,308 are land and the rest water reaching a quarter-mile out from 155 miles of shore. It is known for its collection of historic lighthouses, its sandstone sea caves, a few remnants of old-growth forest and its animal habitats. Madeline Island is the only one of the Apostle Islands left out of the lakeshore, though part of it is protected as a state park. The lakeshore features on the America the Beautiful quarters.
