Toledo

Toledo stands on the right bank of the Tagus in central Iberia, wrapped in a bend of the river, and is the capital of its province and the seat of the government of Castilla–La Mancha. Built on an earlier Carpetanian settlement, it became an important Roman city of Hispania, then the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom and the seat of a powerful archdiocese. Successive rulers left the city layered rather than replaced, the reason it repays walking slowly. The streets are steep and narrow, and the view back across the gorge from the far bank is the one most people remember.
