Cuenca

Cuenca is the capital of its province in Castilla–La Mancha, and its old core developed on a narrow escarpment caged between the Júcar and the Huécar rivers on the western fringes of the Iberian System mountains. It was probably founded around the tenth century, becoming a stronghold of the Arabised Berber lineage of the Banū Zennum with a fortress, Qal’at Kūnka. The site is the point: the town is squeezed onto a rock spur with gorges on both sides, and the hanging houses on the Huécar side are built out over the drop. The walking below the town is as good as the walking in it.
