Thy National Park

Denmark’s first national park in the country proper, opened on 22 August 2008: 244 square kilometres running fifty-five kilometres down the northwest coast from Hanstholm to Agger Tange and only five to twelve kilometres wide. It is dune and heath, bare in places and elsewhere under meadow or conifer plantation, with wet hollows and small lakes between. Drifting sand plagued people here for centuries until organised planting of marram grass and conifers began around 1800; the plantations are the visible record of that fight, and they brought timber, work, and red and roe deer with them.
