Rømø

The southernmost of Denmark’s Wadden Sea islands, a title it inherited when the little uninhabited island of Jordsand sank in 1999, with 650 people spread over 129 square kilometres and a causeway carrying the road in from the mainland. Sylt lies about three kilometres off and is reached by ferry. Whaling money built much of what stands: the Kommandørgård museum keeps a whale skeleton in a house of 1770, kommandør being the old word for a whaler’s captain. A horse-drawn tramway ran from Kongsmark to Lakolk from 1899 until 1940.
