About Retz
Retz is a town in the north-western Weinviertel of Lower Austria, the Wine Quarter that is Austria’s largest wine growing area. After Matthias Corvinus took the town in 1486, it received privileges in the wine trade that made its fortune, and the huge multi-storied cellar system beneath the Hauptplatz was built as a result. The Retzer Erlebniskeller is one of the biggest cellar systems in central Europe, open for guided tours and home to a Christmas market in Advent. The Weintage run for 10 days from Corpus Christi, and the Weinlesefest, the grape harvest festival, fills the last weekend of September.
