Krems an der Donau

A city at the meeting of the Krems and the Danube at the eastern end of the Wachau, in the southern Waldviertel, and a Statutarstadt, both a municipality and a district in its own right. It was first mentioned in 995 in a certificate of Otto III, though people were here long before: a child’s grave found in the city is over 27,000 years old, the oldest grave known in Austria. During the eleventh and twelfth centuries Chremis, as it was then, was almost as large as Vienna.
