Ptuj

The oldest recorded town in Slovenia, inhabited since the late Stone Age, settled by Celts in the Late Iron Age, and grown out of a Roman military fort at a strategic crossing of the Drava on a prehistoric trade route between the Baltic and the Adriatic. Rome controlled it by the first century BC as part of Pannonia. In AD 69 the Danubian legions elected Vespasian emperor here, and the first written mention of the town dates from that same year. Trajan granted it city status in 103 as Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio.
