Lake Como

Lake Como, also called the Lario, is a lake of glacial origin in Lombardy covering 146 square kilometres, the third largest in Italy after Garda and Maggiore. At over 400 metres it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe. Its distinctive Y shape was carved by the ancient Adda glacier, diverted by the mountains into three branches. The shore is steep and the villages are stacked against it, which is why the ferry is the proper way to travel here and the road is the frustrating one.
