Guimarães

Guimarães is a city and municipality in northern Portugal whose historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, listed as an exceptionally well-preserved and authentic example of a medieval settlement evolving into a modern town. It is the capital of the Ave subregion, one of the most industrialised parts of the country, which gives it a working character alongside the old streets. The Nicolinas are its main festivities. The centre is small, granite-built and easily walked in a morning.
