Flåm Railway

Twenty kilometres of track climbing 866 metres from the Sognefjord at Flåm to Myrdal on the Bergen Line, through twenty tunnels and across one bridge. At a maximum gradient of 5.5 per cent it is the steepest standard-gauge railway in Europe, and trains are held to 40 km/h going up and 30 coming down. Building began in 1924 and the line opened in 1940, electrified four years later. Freight stopped in 1992 and low fares nearly closed it; new management raised the prices in 1998 instead. It is now the third most visited attraction in Norway.
