Dresden

Dresden is the capital of Saxony and its second most populous city after Leipzig, the twelfth most populous in Germany and the fourth largest by area after Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne. It is the third most populous city in the area of the former East Germany. The baroque centre on the Elbe was destroyed by American and British bombing towards the end of the Second World War and rebuilt over decades, the Frauenkirche only being completed in 2005, which is worth knowing while looking at it, because almost nothing here is as old as it appears.
