Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella

Established in 2002 to replace and enlarge the older Dovrefjell park of 1974, this is 1,693 square kilometres of alpine ground spread across three counties, with protected landscapes around it bringing the total to 4,366. It exists chiefly for the reindeer: the herds on Snøhetta and Knutshø, together with those in Rondane, are the last wild Fennoscandian reindeer thought to be of Beringia origin. Musk oxen were brought in from 1947 and are potentially dangerous at close range. Wolverine, golden eagle and gyrfalcon are here too, and the arctic fox, extinct locally around 1990, has been successfully reintroduced since 2010.
