Rondane National Park

Norway’s first national park, established on 21 December 1962 and enlarged in 2003 to 963 square kilometres. Ten peaks rise above 2,000 metres, the highest being Rondeslottet, the Rondane castle, at 2,178 metres, and from Rondvatnet at the centre a walker can reach any of them inside a day. The climate is mild for the altitude but dry, too dry for lasting glaciers, so what you get instead is bare rock and lichen above 1,500 metres, kettle holes, and eskers left by melting ice. Herds of wild reindeer depend on the ground here.
