Galdhøpiggen

The highest mountain in Norway, in Scandinavia and in Northern Europe, at 2,469 metres, standing in Lom in the Jotunheimen range. The summit is gabbro, a hard coarse-grained rock thrown up by the Caledonian folding and then shaped by successive ice ages. For years nobody tried it, because geologists believed Snøhetta on Dovrefjell, visible from the Oslo–Trondheim road, was the country’s high point. Three men from Lom settled the matter in 1850: the guide Steinar Sulheim, the local teacher Lars Arnesen and the church warden Ingebrigt Flotten.
