Dingle

The only town on the Dingle Peninsula, on the Atlantic coast about fifty kilometres southwest of Tralee, living on tourism, fishing and agriculture, with a livestock mart that serves the country around it. It is in a Gaeltacht region, 13.7 per cent of people spoke Irish daily in 2016, and in 2005 the minister for Gaeltacht affairs ruled that only Irish names would appear on official signposts in such places. Its population was 1,671 in 2022, with the oldest average age of any town in Ireland. A bottlenose dolphin called Fungie courted human company in the bay from 1983 until he disappeared in 2020.
