About Clos de Vougeot
Clos de Vougeot is a wall-enclosed vineyard in Burgundy and an appellation for red wine from it. At 50.6 hectares it is the largest single vineyard in the Côte de Nuits entitled to grand cru status. Cistercian monks of Cîteaux Abbey created it: the first land was donated between 1109 and 1115, and by 1336 the vineyard was complete and walled, the order’s flagship. The Revolution took it from the church, and in 1944 the château in its upper corner was sold to the Amis du Château du Clos de Vougeot, who gave the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin a 99-year lease on it. The best soils lie around the château, next to Musigny and Grands Échezeaux.
