Chur

Reputedly the oldest town in Switzerland, in the Rhine valley where the river turns north. Archaeological evidence goes back to the Pfyn culture of 3900–3500 BC, with Bronze Age Urnfield and Laugen-Melaun settlements from 1300 to 800 BC and Iron Age occupation from the fifth to third centuries found in the eastern part of the modern centre. Rome conquered the area in 15 BC as the province of Raetia, and under Diocletian in the late third century the settlement of Curia Raetorum was made the provincial capital.
