Beppu

A city of 113,045 people at the west end of Beppu Bay in Ōita Prefecture, famous for its hot springs, which marked its centenary as a city in 2024. The east of it is alluvial fan and plain built by the Asami, Haruki and Sakai rivers running down into the bay, and the main urban area is squeezed into that narrow ground, roughly five kilometres east to west and ten north to south. West of the town the country opens out into scenery like the Yufugawa Canyon, one of the One Hundred Views of Oita. Ōita, the prefectural capital, adjoins it.
