Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park

Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici is the only national park in Catalonia and one of fifteen in Spain. It protects a wild stretch of the Pyrenees with peaks to 3,017 metres at Besiberri Sud and nearly two hundred lakes, many of them glacial in origin. The core area covers 141 square kilometres with a buffer zone of 267 square kilometres around it. Water is the character of the place, the Catalan name means winding waters, and the lake circuits are the classic walking. The high routes are a summer season; snow holds on the passes long after the valleys clear.
