Jukkasjärvi

Jukkasjärvi is a locality in Kiruna Municipality, Norrbotten County, with 548 inhabitants in 2010, at 321 metres elevation. The name is Northern Sami: Čohkkirasjávri, the lake of assembly, after the Sami marketplace that stood by the water where the village was founded. It is now known worldwide for the hotel rebuilt from river ice every winter and allowed to melt each spring, but the Sami market history is the older and more interesting story.
