Bernkastel-Kues

Bernkastel-Kues is a town on the Middle Mosel, roughly 50 km from Trier, well known for its winegrowing and the birthplace of the philosopher Nikolaus von Kues, Cusanus. Its medieval marketplace keeps gabled timber-frame houses, the narrow Spitzhäuschen of 1416 and a Renaissance Town Hall of 1608, and the Doctorbrunnen fountain tells the legend of its famous wine, the Bernkasteler Doctor. Above the town stand the Castle Landshut ruins. The Mosel is known for steep vineyards over the river and for Riesling that is often light, crisp and high in acidity, a region some consider the leading one in Germany for international prestige.
