Eltz Castle

Eltz Castle is a medieval castle set in the hills above the Moselle between Koblenz and Trier, still owned by a branch of the House of Eltz, who have lived there since the twelfth century. Along with Bürresheim and Lissingen it is one of only three castles in the Eifel never to have been destroyed. It stands on a rock spur 70 metres high, bounded on three sides by water. There is no road to the gate: the approach is a walk down through the woods, and the castle appears all at once.
