Trier

Trier stands on the banks of the Moselle in a valley between low vine-covered hills of red sandstone, in the west of Rhineland-Palatinate near the Luxembourg border and within the Moselle wine region. The Romans founded it in the late first century BC, and it kept more of them than anywhere else in the country: the Porta Nigra, the imperial baths, the basilica and the amphitheatre all still stand. It claims to be the oldest city in Germany, and the surviving stonework makes that claim hard to argue with.
