About Gorgonzola

Gorgonzola is a town in the Metropolitan City of Milan, in the Martesana north-east of the city, and Gorgonzola cheese is named after it. The town claims to have been the cheese’s birthplace in 879, though other places claim the origin too, and the area has a long history of dairy cows and soft cheese. Gorgonzola is a blue cheese of unskimmed cow’s milk under a protected designation of origin, made in two styles: dolce, delicate and buttery, and piccante, pungent and crumbly. Each September the town holds the Sagra Nazionale del Gorgonzola DOP. It is twinned with Ambert in France, home of Fourme d’Ambert.
