Hallstatt

A small town between the southwestern shore of its lake and the steep slopes of the Dachstein, on the road that links Salzburg and Graz. Salt has been produced here since prehistoric times, in quantity and under evidently organised arrangements, and the wealth that generated is visible in the prehistoric cemeteries, one of which Johann Georg Ramsauer found at the Salzberg mines in 1846. The place gave its name to the Hallstatt culture of the Early Iron Age. UNESCO listed the cultural landscape in 1997. It is also, frankly, an area of overtourism.
