Velika Planina

A dispersed high settlement of herders’ dwellings on a karst plateau in the Kamnik Alps, and one of very few herding settlements of this scale left in Europe. The huts and barns are mostly wooden, single-roomed, with shingled oval roofs reaching almost to the ground so that the space beneath the overhang shelters livestock. Few people live here permanently, but in summer a sizeable population of herdsmen brings flocks up to the pastures. It became an independent settlement only in 1985. A cable car runs up from Kamniška Bistrica.
