Waikīkī

A neighborhood of Honolulu on the south shore of Oahu, and the beach of the same name. Waikiki Beach is one of six in the district, alongside Queen’s Beach, Kuhio Beach, Gray’s Beach, Fort DeRussy Beach and Kahanamoku Beach, and its sand is almost entirely man-made. Public places here include Kapiolani Park, Fort DeRussy, Kahanamoku Lagoon, Kuhio Beach Park and Ala Wai Harbor. The Hawaiian name means spouting fresh water, likely a reference to the springs and streams that fed wetlands once separating the district from the interior of the island. Waikiki was the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, from 1795 to 1796.
