Haleakalā National Park

A park on the island of Maui, named after Haleakala, the dormant volcano within its boundaries. It covers 33,265 acres, of which 24,719 are wilderness area. The mountain was originally part of Hawaii National Park along with Mauna Loa and Kilauea on the island of Hawaii, created in 1916; Hawaii Volcanoes was made a separate national park in 1961, and this land was designated a national park in its own right in 1976, with its boundaries expanded in 2005. It was named an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980. The name is Hawaiian for house of the sun: by local legend the demigod Maui imprisoned the sun here to lengthen the day.
